Thunderstorms, rainshowers expected over PH on Good Friday

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms may be experienced over Metro Manila and the rest of the country on Good Friday, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

In its 24-hour forecast, PAGASA said these weather conditions are caused by the easterlies affecting the eastern section of the Philippines as well as by localized thunderstorms.

Flash floods or landslides may occur during severe thunderstorms, PAGASA warned.

For wind and coastal water conditions, PAGASA said the country will have light to moderate winds and slight to moderate water conditions of up to 2.5 meters.

Dam update

Meanwhile, the water level in some dams slightly dropped: Ambuklao, from 744.45 to 744.27 meters; San Roque, from 235.15 to  235.00 m; and Caliraya, from 286.67 to 286.65 m.

On the other hand, the water level slightly increased or maintained in Angat, Ipo, La Mesa, Binga, Pantabangan, and Magat dams.

PAGASA declared the start of the El Niño phenomenon on July 4 last year.

The El Niño phenomenon is characterized by the abnormal warming of sea surface temperature in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean leading to below normal rainfall.

On March 7 this year, PAGASA issued a La Niña Watch alert as the phenomenon may start to develop in June and its effects may be experienced in the later part of 2024.

La Niña is characterized by unusually cooler than average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific leading to above normal rainfall conditions with possible floods and landslides. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA Integrated News
