Philippines to have longest day of 2024 on June 21
The summer solstice is set to occur on Friday, June 21, said state weather bureau PAGASA in its June 2024 astronomical diary.
During the summer solstice, Filipinos and other countries within the northern hemisphere may expect the longest day and the shortest night for the year.
“On this day, the Sun reaches its highest northern position in the sky, in the constellation of Cancer at a declination of 23.5°N. Astronomers mark this day as the start of summer in the northern hemisphere, and winter in the southern hemisphere,” said PAGASA.
According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the position of the earth’s northern axis is pointed closest to the sun during the summer solstice.
The opposite occurs during the Winter Solstice in December.
The summer solstice is set to begin by 4:51 a.m. on Friday.
PAGASA’s daily weather forecast states that Metro Manila will see up to 13 hours of daytime, with sunrise at 5:28 a.m. and sunset at 6:27 p.m. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
