Tino leaves PAGASA monitoring domain with over 100 dead
Typhoon Kalmaegi, which was locally known as “Tino” , has already exited the monitoring domain of state weather bureau PAGASA on Thursday evening, leaving over 100 persons dead in its wake.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm "Fung-Wong" was monitored outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) or 1,570 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao. It has maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 105 kilometers per hour.
It is moving northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour.
The typhoon left the PAR on early Thursday at 12:30 a.m. But PAGASA only lifted the tropical cyclone wind signals in the afternoon as the typhoon approached Vietnam.
According to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), 114 individuals died as a result of the typhoon with most of the fatalities were reported in Cebu Province with 71.
Further, OCD said 127 people were reported missing, 65 in Cebu and 62 in Negros Occidental. Meanwhile, 82 others were reported injured
Meanwhile, initial assessment by the Department of Agriculture showed that damage and losses sustained by the agricultural sector has reached over P13 million.
The Agriculture Department said the value of production loss due to the weather disturbance stood at P13.26 million based on preliminary reports from the agency’s regional field offices in Western and Eastern Visayas.
Affected commodities include rice, corn, high-value crops, livestock and poultry.
Several infrastructures, including houses were also damaged. For instance, 80 to 95% of homes in Silago, Southern Leyte were totally damaged.
The OCD also advised the public to prepare itself for a possible super typhoon that is a thousand-kilometer wide that will reach Luzon by this weekend
The tropical cyclone will be given the local name “Uwan” once it enters the PAR late Friday evening or early Saturday morning, said PAGASA. “Uwan” may reach typhoon category on Friday and super typhoon status on Saturday. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
