LRT1 to suspend operations on Jan. 30 due to signaling system upgrade

Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), the operator of Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT1), on Thursday announced the suspension of the railway system’s operations on Sunday, January 30.

In an advisory, LRMC said the temporary suspension of LRT1’s operations is “to give way to the completion of the upgrade of its signaling system.”

“Normal operations of LRT1 will resume on January 31, 2022, Monday,” it said.

In November last year, LRMC announced the upgrade of LRT1’s signaling system to be conducted on November 28, 2021, January 23, 2022, and January 30, 2022.

The company said, together with its contractor, it will be performing a series of test runs and trial runs along the LRT1 on the identified dates to ensure that the new signaling system for the railway system is ready.

Railway signaling or the traffic light system for railway is a system used to direct railway traffic and keep trains clear of each other at all times, ensuring smooth and safe operations.

The upgrade to the new Alstom signaling system is needed to accommodate the commercial use of fourth generation train sets on the existing system, which is targeted to begin in mid-2022, LRMC said.  — VBL, GMA News
