Maine Mendoza sees the elusive Aurora Borealis from her plane window

We know Lady Luck favors Maine Mendoza, but we didn't know she favored Maine this much!

Because from her plane window, Maine Mendoza saw the elusive Aurora Borealis aka the Northern Lights – you know that, dazzling natural light display from Mother Earth that many people travel to Iceland for?

On Twitter, Maine posted photos of the natural phenomenon. “Probably the coolest thing I have seen from an airplane window,” read a portion of Maine’s tweet. She credited Sal, a Philippine Airlines crew member and hashtagged her post #NorthernLights.

The Aurora Borealis aka northern lights is a natural light phenomenon visible from the northern hemisphere. Iceland, Finland, Norway, Canada, and Alaska are some of the places people can see the Northern Lights from.

The same phenomenon – when the sky lights up with dazzling and dancing green, purple, blue lights – is also visible from the southern hemisphere but that one is called Aurora Australis.

According to the Northern Lights Center website, “The Northern Lights are actually the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun’s atmosphere.”

Colors vary thanks to the type of colliding gas particles.

Aurora is a cyclic phenomenon that peaks every 11 years. Researchers say Aurora reached the peak of this particular cycle in 2013. It also follows seasons, when she shows herself late in the night, but even then, it's highly elusive.
