Bianca Umali and Miguel Tanfelix dance the Igay at 'Sahaya' media con, gives a teaser of the cultural fare the show offers

At the media conference of the highly anticipated GMA drama, "Sahaya," Bianca Umali and Miguel Tanfelix graced the stage with a folk dance called Igal or Pangalay.

The on-screen couple were dressed in traditional clothing while meticulously swaying to the regal sound of gabang, a metal percussion instrument.

Bianca was swirling her hands with ‘janggay,’ a long metallic fingernail extensions which highlights even the smallest finger movements of a Pangalay dancer.

Her onscreen partner Miguel also charmed the audience in his indigenous costume. Committing to the Badjaw’s mode of dressing, Miguel wore a patadjung that was wrapped around his waist.

It's a sampling of the kind of introduction — and maybe even education — of Badjaw culture "Sahaya" can and will give its viewers once it hits our TV screens on March 18.

The new epic drama-serye aims to capture the richness of Philippine indigenous culture through the humble life of a lovely Badjaw girl named Sahaya.

At the same time, it will drive viewers in an odyssey-like journey of Sahaya while she goes through the big waves of challenges in identity, family and love.

The cast shared there was an undeniable pressure to portray the Badjaw culture in Philippine television, noting that they should capture the culture as it is without offending anyone.

But director Zig Dulay knows "Sahaya" is an opportunity to put one of the marginalized sectors into the spotlight.

Most of the cast members said they said yes to "Sahaya" because of the story it offers the viewers: new and unique.

Bianca revealed the cast, especially those playing the Badjaw, thoroughly studied not only the sketches of their characters but also the culture and their heritage.

Likewise, Miguel, who portrays Sahaya’s love interest Ahmad, said that the production behind Sahaya always makes sure that every detail that the viewers will see in the episodes is accurate and correct.

Migo Adecer will play the role of Jordan, a wealthy Manileño who will compete with Ahmad for Sahaya’s love.

Bianca and Miguel are also joined by Eric Quizon, Zoren Legaspi, Mylene Dizon, Pen Medina, Debra Liz, Juan Rodrigo, Ana Roces, Ashley Ortega, Snooky Serna, Benjamin Alves, Karl Medina and Jasmine Curtis-Smith in the highly anticipated epic drama serye. — LA, GMA News
