Amalia Fuentes' wake open to public beginning Sunday night


Fans, friends and supporters of veteran actress Amalia Fuentes, who died Saturday, will have a chance to pay their last respects beginning Sunday night.

Fuentes' grandson Alfonso Martinez, son of her only daughter Liezl, announced on Facebook that the public viewing will start on Sunday, October 6, at 7 p.m. at the Mt. Carmel Church in New Manila, Quezon City.

It will last until 12 a.m. on Monday.

Public viewing will then resume on Monday, Oct. 7, from 1 p.m. to 12 a.m. Tuesday.

A Mass will be held at 7:30 p.m. on both days. 

Interment will be held on Tuesday after the 8 a.m. Mass.

 

"For those who love my Lola," Martinez wrote in the caption for the post.

Fuentes passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 79.

The veteran actress died in her home in New Manila, Quezon City, according to showbiz columnist and talent manager Lolis Solis in an interview on Dobol B sa News TV aired on GMA News TV.

Fuentes suffered a stroke a few years ago and has been bedridden for the past two years, Solis added.

Once named the "Elizabeth Taylor of the Philippines," Fuentes made a number of films starting in the 50s.

Among her movies were Ibulong Mo sa Hangin (1966) and Pag-ibig Mo Buhay Ko (1973) for which she won Best Actress awards from the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) and Manila Film Festival, respectively.

Fuentes also became a member of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.

Her grandchildren Alfonso, Alyanna and Alissa posted photos of the young Fuentes on social media on Saturday, adding that their grandmother is now with their mother Liezl. At age 47, Liezl died in March 2015 after battling breast cancer.

Actor Aga Muhlach, nephew of Fuentes, said the veteran actress paved the way for all of them to enter showbiz

"You started it all for us. You have taught me so much in life. You were an inspiration. You treated me like your son. I’m at a loss for words. Go rest now," he said.

Fuentes' nephew Niño Muhlach wrote "Rest in Peace Tita Nena. We will miss you!" as he shared a video clip of his son Alonzo serenading her. —KG, GMA News
