Julie Anne recorded 'Rocket to the Moon' by herself. This is how she did it

Julie Anne San Jose has been chosen to sing the local version of "Rocket to the Moon," the theme song of the animated movie "Over the Moon."

Speaking to GMA News Online, Julie Anne shared she actually recorded the song...all by herself, in her home studio.

"I had to do it on my own since hindi makapag-schedule ng studio [because of the pandemic]. May equipment naman ako sa bahay — ang importante lang naman is a good mic and an editing software para malinaw yung audio," she said.

After getting a call from GMA Artist Center, informing her that Netflix had reached out for the project, Julie immediately searched for "Rocket to the Moon" on the internet and studied it.

"Inaral ko na agad," she said excitedly. "When my manager called, na-curious ako, I immediately looked it up and listened to it."

And upon receiving the material from Netflix, Julie Anne set about recording the song by herself. "Ako lang sa bahay. Mas convenient na nandito sa bahay. May mic naman ako at editing software, where I can mix and edit my vocals and minus one," she said.

It's a result of what she's been doing all through the quarantine period. "Sobrang dami namang time [nuon], I took the opportunity to learn engineering, yung technical side [of recording]. I have a mixing board naman, equipment na paisa-isa," Julie added.

After recording and mixing, she sent it to the "the Netflix team and they liked it naman. Sobrang na-flatter ako!"

But Julie says that's not even the most challenging part of the whole project. "It was the video shoot!" She says laughing.

In the entire project, it was the only time she had to set foot outside her house, heading to a chroma studio where she was filmed interacting with imaginary cartoon characters.

"Kailangan ko mag-imagine ng characters so may konting animation. For me iyon yung pinaka-exciting. Medyo challenging din siya kasi I was interacting with imaginary characters. I have to look at certain spots, paano ang movements, lagpas na ba ako sa frame? Green screen lang kasi eh," she said.

Julie Anne describes the whole shoot as chill, with the Netflix crew so nice and accommodating. "They were instructing me, kung ano ang kailangan ko gawin, how to interact with the imaginary characters, kahit wala sila sa set. And when I watched the preview, wow! Ganun pala yun."

Netflix Philippines just announced that Julie Anne San Jose is doing the local version of "Rocket to the Moon," the theme song of the animated movie "Over the Moon," originally performed by Fil-Chinese actress Cathy Ang. — GMA News
