What does ‘IRL’ host Gabbi Garcia think of ‘cancel culture’ on social media?
Aside from travel, food, relationships and other lifestyle topics, Gabbi Garcia’s newest youth-oriented show will also talk about societal issues.
In an interview with GMA News Online, Gabbi shared her thoughts on “cancel culture” on social media.
Despite admitting that cancel culture scared her especially because public figures were more prone to it, she told GMA News Online that one shouldn’t worry about it “as long as you know what you’re talking about and you know nasa tama ka, I feel like you shouldn’t be afraid of it.”
IRL is a youth-oriented reality program where both millennials, Gen Zs, and the young at heart can have their voices be heard about anything.
It will talk about relationships, music, sports, fashion, travels, food and everything else inside and outside the digital world.
But more than that, it will also tackle the role of the youth for the betterment of the society.
In an interview with the entertainment press, Gabbi said Gen Zs were “brave and risk-takers.”
“We really speak up when we know something’s not right, so advice siguro at the end of the day, kasi lahat naman tayo gusto lang nating ma-improve and we all just want the same thing and that is to improve on things to make life better,” Gabbi said.
She encouraged the young generation to speak their mind as long as they had educated themselves on what they wanted to talk about.
“I think we are free to speak our minds, but know what you are talking about. You can speak your mind if you know what you’re talking about, if you have done your research, if you have educated yourself, and as long as you don’t hurt or disrespect people, then you’re free to speak your mind,” she said.
She added, “it’s different na when you’re attacking.”
Still, she encouraged people “to speak your mind and to share your thoughts and opinions about these certain topics, go ahead.”
When you are vocal about a stand you’re educated about, Gabbi said “you might not know na you’re inspiring, use your influence talaga. It’s a nice platform, social media, but do your research.”
Gabbi Garcia said social media had its pros and cons “so it’s up to you if you use it as a weapon or you’ll use it to your advantage.”
She told PEP.ph and the rest of the press that netizens including herself sometimes forgit that “social media is a gift and it shouldn’t be used as a weapon. It should be used to connect to people, to connect with each other.”
Gabbi said she hoped that people could “just view it as a gift and not as a weapon to hurt people and to hurt one another, ’yun lang.”
“I feel like my message is to remind myself that social media is a gift that we use to connect with each other,” she added.
IRL is a youth-oriented reality program where millennials and GenZs hang out and share their thoughts, as they make their voices heard on things that matter to them—love, music, sports, fashion, travels, gaming, and everything else inside and outside their digital world.
The show is set to air on GMA News TV every Thursday at 9:15 pm starting Nov. 12.
