‘Habambuhay’ documentary on 100 years of Philippine cinema to stream online this January

Take a look at how Philippine cinema grew in the past 100 years through the documentary “Habambuhay.”

As Philippine cinema celebrates 100 years, the documentary series shares how filmmakers and artists have faced challenges to bring their ideas to life.

As seen on the one-minute trailer, the documentary will show details that made it possible for some of the most iconic films to be shown and enjoyed by many.

“The number of films was dwindling. If there was no intervention, then the industry was really going to die,” said director Laurice Guillen.

“My solution as a filmmaker and storyteller is to adapt to the times. You take advantage of the technology. We should show our audiences something different so they do not grow tired of it,” said Brillante Mendoza.

“We need to free cinema, it’s a young art form,” said Lav Diaz.

Apart from directors, also among those who will be featured on the documentary are actors including Nora Aunor, Gloria Romero, Cherie Gil, and the late Eddie Garcia.

“Habambuhay: Remembering Philippine Cinema” will be streamed on TBA Studios’ YouTube channel on Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. – RC, GMA News
