Royce Cabrera starrer 'Marupok AF (Where Is The Lie?)' to premiere at Slamdance Film Festival
Royce Cabrera is starring in a film that will premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival in the United States in January.
Titled "Marupok AF (Where Is The Lie?)," the film is directed by Quark Henares and also stars EJ Jallorina and Maris Racal.
"Marupok AF (Where Is The Lie?)" is inspired by a viral Twitter post that became a national obsession in the Philippines, at least for a weekend.
A dark comedy told from three different perspectives, the movie tells the story of Janzen Torres (EJ Jallorina), a hopeless romantic who goes on a dating app and matches with the seemingly perfect Theo Balmaceda (Royce Cabrera).
On the day of their meet-up, Janzen is ghosted, leading her into an intricate web of deceit, lies, and catfishing led by sociopathic mastermind Beanie Landridos (Maris Racal).
According to Quark, the film is premiering at the Breakouts Program of Slamdance.
“I couldn't be more excited to be in the Utah snow this January,” he said in a statement.
“I am beyond thrilled that ‘Marupok AF (Where Is The Lie?)’ is part of the Breakouts section of Slamdance. When I got the news that it was going to Slamdance, I was in a crowded movie theater with Liza Diño. We started screaming like fools," he added.
"Marupok AF (Where Is The Lie?)" is presented by Anima Studios, whose head and executive producer Bianca Balbuena said "it felt very important to us to tell this story."
"“The LGBTQIA+ community is constantly bullied in the Philippines, and it was inspiring to see this story of everyone coming to protect the original victim unfold in real time.”
Royce is known for his work in independent films such as "F#*@bois" (2019). He is currently starring in "Start-Up PH" as Jefferson Katipunan, a former classmate of Davidson (Jeric Gonzales).
Meanwhile, Jasmine Curtis-Smith is also starring in a Sundance Film Festival entry "In My Mother's Skin." It will be screened under the Midnight section of the festival.
"Marupok AF (Where Is The Lie?)" will have its world premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival on Sunday, January 22, at the Treasure Mountain Inn Ballroom, USA.
