'Voltes V: Legacy’ director Mark Reyes assures love story element won’t be a ’distraction’ to the show

The mega trailer of "Voltes V: Legacy" dropped in the first hour of 2023, and it has already earned several praises from excited viewers.

In the glorious five-minute trailer, Steve Armstrong and Jamie Robinson's love story was seen as a layer yet to unfold in the much-awaited live-action series.

While netizens have a mixed reaction about this part, "Voltes V: Legacy" director Mark Reyes assured it wouldn't distract from the main storyline.

In Tuesday's press conference, Reyes said the love story element is intended for the Filipino audience.

"If you watched the anime, it's a soap [opera]," the director said. "That's why I guess it's close to Filipinos because there's a heart to it; there's a familial storyline."

The live-action series adaptation features 80 episodes in total, with the "Voltes V: Legacy" team expanding on the love story between Steve and Jamie because Filipinos are known to be "hopeless romantics."

"If there is a love story, there is a bigger stake," he said.

"Imagine mo[for Steve], [Would he] risk his life to save Jamie [at the expense of the] mission being compromised?" Reyes added.

Nonetheless, Reyes said the love story adds a different flavor to the action-packed series.

"It's not a distraction at all to the main storyline of Voltes V, [rather] it's one of the flavors that's gonna be enjoyed by the teenagers," he said.

As of writing, the "Voltes V: Legacy" trailer has amassed over 3.3 million views on Facebook and more than a million on YouTube.
