Barbie Forteza, Sanya Lopez, David Licauco, Alden Richards to star in Pulang Araw

Barbie Forteza, Sanya Lopez, David Licauco, and Alden Richards are set to star in the biggest historical action-drama of 2024.

According to Aubrey Carampel’s report on “24 Oras,” Thursday, the cast attended a story conference where their roles and the storyline were discussed.

Titled “Pulang Araw,” it will follow the story of the events that happened during the Japanese occupation era and World War 2 in our country.

“Coming from ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra’ na parang we really left a mark, the show itself, the team behind it left a mark and really gave a big impact in terms of Philippine history. So now, mas ma-eembrace natin ang pagbabaliktanaw sa ating historya,” Barbie said.

[Coming from 'Maria Clara and Ibarra,' it's like we really left a mark, the show itself, the team behind it left a mark and really gave a big impact in terms of Philippine history. So now, we can more fully embrace looking back at our history.]

Barbie will play the role of Adelina, and Alden will portray the role of her half-brother, Eduardo, who has American blood.

“I’m very grateful to GMA na binigay nga nila sa akin ito because it's basically showcasing my roots na hindi ko na-experience growing up na ‘yun nga, ‘yung pagiging pagkakaroon ko ng dugong Amerikano,” Alden said.

[I'm very grateful to GMA for giving this to me because it's basically showcasing my roots that I didn't experience growing up, that being my American heritage.]

Meanwhile, the series will serve as a reunion project for Barbie and Sanya, who last worked together in the GMA Afternoon Prime Series “Half Sisters.”

Sanya will play the role of Teresita, Adelina’s half-sister.

They will also act as bodabil stars, requiring them to take tap dancing and singing lessons.

“Masarap gumawa kasi ng teleserye na alam mong ‘pag nagawa mo 'to, maraming mai-inspire eh sa storya na 'to at gusto kong maramdaman ‘yung struggle noon ng mga Pilipino kung paano nila nalampasan ‘yung World War 2 noon,” Sanya said.

[It's fulfilling to create a teleserye because you know that when you make this, it will inspire many through this story. I want to feel the struggles of Filipinos during World War 2 and how they overcame it.]

Moreover, “Pulang Araw” also serves as Barbie and David’s return to television as a love team.

As part of his preparation, David will study the Japanese language for his role as Hiroshi, a Japanese soldier.

“Super grateful na si Barbie ‘yung kasama ko kasi kapag kasama ko siya, mas dumadali ‘yung buhay ko, of course sanay na ‘ko sa kan’ya. And you know, somehow, she calms me down whenever kinakabahan ako,” David said.

[I'm super grateful that Barbie is the one I'm with because when I'm with her, my life becomes easier. Of course, I'm already used to her. And you know, somehow, she calms me down whenever I get nervous.]

The project will also include stories from real people who experienced living in the middle of the war.

“Sana in a way, itong ‘Pulang Araw’ is maging katuwang or kaibigan nila ‘pag nagsimula kaming umere sa GMA na hindi sila nag-iisa, alam namin ang mga pinagdaanan nila, at nandito kami para bigyan sila ng pasasalamat at papuri para sa mga sakripisyo,” Alden said.

[I hope in a way, 'Pulang Araw' becomes their companion or friend when we start airing on GMA, that they are not alone. We know what they've been through, and we are here to give them gratitude and praise for their sacrifices.]

They will also be joined by Epy Quizon, Angelu De Leon, Rochelle Pangilinan, and Aidan Veneracion, among others.

The story is written by Suzette Doctolero and will be directed by Dominic Zapata.

Barbie and David recently starred in “Maging Sino Ka Man,” which came after the success of “Maria Clara at Ibarra.”

Meanwhile, Sanya starred in the fantaserye "Mga Lihim ni Urduja,” and Alden has an upcoming movie titled "Family of Two (A Mother and Son’s Story) with Sharon Cuneta."

Don't miss "Pulang Araw" on GMA in 2024!
