How does Ivan Mayrina uphold his credibility as a journalist? Kapuso anchor answers
How does Ivan Mayrina, with his 25 years of experience, navigate the challenges of misinformation to maintain his reputation as one of GMA’s most trusted news anchors?
In an interview with GMA News Online, the Kapuso journalist said that the job of delivering news in the best way possible has already become a natural part of him.
“Parang instinct mo siya lagi na this is the story that you’re supposed to produce, you produce it in a certain way,” he said.
For Mayrina, clarity of purpose also fuels his daily motivation.
“We stand for journalism that is accurate, that is fair, and most of all, that makes sense to people, that is useful to them, that will help them make proper decisions in their daily living,” he said, adding that such a mindset has carried him through all these years.
Mayrina added, “Iniisip ko lang lagi, bakit ko ba ginagawa? ‘Pag malinaw sa iyo kung bakit mo ginagawa ang isang bagay, you will stay inspired and you will stay motivated.”
He also shared his enduring principles for maintaining trust and credibility as a news anchor, emphasizing the paramount importance of accuracy in news delivery.
“We try not to make mistakes. ‘Yun talaga. Maingat ka,” he said.
“For example, in the newsroom, there are several layers of vetting. Minsan, it's always more convenient to just go ahead kasi ngayon, sometimes it's a question of who gets it first versus who gets it right. But it doesn't have to be, nobody has to make that choice. Dapat tama. ‘Di bali na mahuli ka nang konti, basta dapat tama,” he added.
Mayrina recounted instances where criticisms arose for delivering the news “late,” but he stands by the decision to prioritize truth.
“Minsan, may magki-criticize sa ‘yo: ‘Ah nahuli ka.’ Pero tama ako. Sinong nakakuha ng tama? Kami. Because that's how we do it. Because there are certain standards to journalism that are non-negotiable. And you stick to that. So, that's how you maintain credibility,” he said.
Mayrina renewed his contract with GMA Network on Friday.
He said that he doesn't see myself being anywhere else."
"So makakaasa kayo, kung ano man ‘yung siguro ikinatuwa ninyo in the last 25 years, we’ll have more of that,” he said.
Mayrina is currently a news anchor on “24 Oras Weekend” with Pia Arcangel and Nelson Canlas. —JCB, GMA Integrated News
