House members seek recognition for SB19 over career achievements, role in promoting P-pop

Several lawmakers in the House of Representatives have proposed recognizing Filipino boy band SB19 for its recent achievements and contributions to elevating P-pop on the global stage.

House Resolution 1280, introduced by Reps. Javier Miguel "Javi" Benitez, Nelson Legacion, Sarah Jane Elago, and Kathryn Joyce Gorriceta, seeks to commend SB19—composed of Pablo, Josh, Stell, Ken, and Justin—for their appointment as Department of Tourism ambassadors and their historic appearances at Lollapalooza 2026 and Major League Baseball.

The DOT named SB19 the Philippines' newest tourism ambassadors on July 26. Three days later, member Josh Cullen threw the ceremonial first pitch before the Chicago White Sox's game against the New York Yankees, marking the first time a P-pop artist participated in the pregame ceremony of a regular-season Major League Baseball game.

On July 30, SB19 became the first homegrown Filipino act to perform at Lollapalooza, delivering a 10-song set on the Allianz Stage at Grant Park in Chicago that featured hits such as "DAM," "GENTO," and "MAPA."

"SB19's immense international reach has directly catalyzed a surge in music tourism, inspiring returning overseas Filipino workers, many of whom have not visited the Philippines in years, as well as international fans to travel to the country to witness their concerts live on home soil, thereby generating significant economic activity, increasing hotel occupancy, and boosting national tourism," HR 1280 stated.

"Through their uncompromising commitment to write and perform Filipino music, SB19 has inspired thousands of foreign fans across Asia, North America, Europe, and beyond to learn the Filipino language and deeply appreciate Philippine traditions, heritage, and values."

Benitez added that "SB19 made room for the next Filipino act that follows."

"The work now is making sure the industries behind them, from music to tourism, are ready for the attention," he said.

Meanwhile, Calamba, Laguna Rep. Charisse Anne Hernandez said in House Resolution 1266 that SB19's "outstanding accomplishments exemplify excellence, resilience, innovation, and patriotism, making them worthy of the recognition and commendation of the House of Representatives."

Both resolutions are currently pending before the House Committee on Creative Industries. –VBL, GMA News
