(Update) Broadcaster Tiya Dely hospitalized after suffering stroke
MANILA, Philippines - Veteran broadcaster Fidela "Tia Dely" Magpayo was rushed to a hospital in Manila after suffering a stroke shortly before midnight Saturday. Radio dzRH reported that Magpayo was rushed to the Manila Doctors Hospital at about 11 p.m. after suffering a stroke inside the dzRH compound in Pasay City. As of Sunday morning, dzRH said she remained at the hospital's intensive care unit. In a separate radio interview, Dr. Remedios Sason, a close friend of Magpayo, assured that the broadcaster is in stable condition. “Tia Delly is well and she’s just resting here in the hospital,” Sason said. Sason, however, urged Magpayo’s friends from the media to continue praying for her full recovery. “She needs your prayers very badly,” she said. Magpayo was among the recipients of the Gawad Plaridel award of the University of the Philippines in 2006 for keeping her dedication, integrity and professionalism to her job. She had been a radio host, newscaster, singer, writer and producer in radio since the 1940s, popularizing Filipino songs at a time when American music dominated the airwaves. She also pushed for the education of the correct and proper use of the Filipino language and advocated the preservation of traditional Filipino values of respect, honor, and love in the advices that she gave to her listeners. - with Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV
