Top bands, indie directors on GMA


The Philippines’ top rock/pop bands and independent film directors were featured in a special hour-long yearend report produced by GMA News and Public Affairs, "Mga Ingay ng Bayan 2006" that aired Saturday night, Dec. 30, on GMA television. Through song and dance, the bands Mojofly, Cueshe, Shamrock, KJwan, Dong Abay Band and Reggae Mistress rendered the biggest news events of 2006, including the natural calamities, tragedies, scandals, and issues that hounded the world of politics, entertainment and sports. Pop artist Bayang Barrios also performed. The report featured as well "The Philippines Most Wanted" list of Filipinos both prominent and obscure who were voted as the role models of 2006, in a poll conducted by GMA 7. Ranked among the top 10 "Persons of the Year" were boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, Everest climbers Romi Garduce, Leo Oracion, and Erwin Pastour Emata, but also ordinary Filipinos who are exemplars of honesty and courage, including a boy who swam across the Mactan Channel, a policeman who returned a lost wallet, and a boy who risked his life to save his siblings from a fire. Independent film directors took charge of each of the documentary segments. They included Monti Parungao for "Mga Kwentong Gloria," Ra Rivera for "Scams and Scandals," Robert Quebral for "Mga Kalamidad;" Emman dela Cruz for "Trahedyang Gawa ng Tao;" Pam Miras for the segment on sports events; Jeck for the segment on showbusiness; and Francis Hechanova for the final "Person of the Year" and "In Memoriam" segment. GMA7’s top broadcasters Mike Enriquez, Jessica Soho, Mel Tiangco, Arnold Clavio, Vicky Morales, Pia Guanio, and Chino Trinidad co-hosted the seven-segment report. Garduce, the Philippines most accomplished mountaineer, was a guest host. The documentary was produced by a 40-person team of senior and seasoned GMA producers, writers, editors, and researchers led by program manager Jaileen Jimeno and executive producer Sherilyn Bruan.
