Teejay Marquez on being a Kapuso: 'Sobrang thankful ko po sa GMA kasi tinanggap nila ako'

 
His first TV appearance was in Tween Hearts where he played Nathan, the promdi. He also had two indie films, Pagari and Basement. At the 26th PMPC Star Awards for Television 2012, Teejay bagged the Best Male New TV Personality Award together with Derrick Monasterio. At present he is part of the cast of Pyra Babaeng Apoy alongside Protégé winners, Thea Tolentino and Jeric Gonzales.

Last October 23, 2013, GMANetwork.com sat down with this young Kapuso actor. Find out more about him as he shares his humble beginnings in showbiz.

The young Kapuso actor started as a commercial model. He auditioned for many commercial ads before becoming a Kapuso star. The Kapuso actor Sef Cadayona and the Kapuso hunk actor Alder Richards were among his friends before entering showbiz.

“Mga kasabayan ko sila parang naiingit ako, bakit sila nag-aartista na tapos ako nandito pa rin sa VTR,” he shared.

Hoping to be a Kapuso actor like his good friends, he tried his luck in showbiz. It was with Kuya Germs’ Walang Tulugan show that made his dream a reality.

“Nu’ng nakilala ko yung manager ko, sabi ko, ‘try niyo po ako’. Dinala niya ako sa GMA. I met Kuya Germs, sabi niya, ‘dahil hindi ka pa naman GMA, mag-Walang Tulugan ka.”

After that, “We went to the fourth floor. Nagpi-pictorial ang second batch of Tween Hearts. Napadaan ako, and then sabi nila, ‘Picture ka nga’. Sabi ng manager ko, ‘Huwag ka mag-expect ha, pinikturan ka lang, then by Sunday ibinalita sa akin na may taping ako ng Monday, dahil nakapasok na ako ng Tween Hearts and the rest is history.”

He continued, “Dati pumipila pa ako at ang tagal nu’n. Tapos ito, napadaan lang ako at pinikturan, nakuha na ako. Sobrang thankful ko po sa GMA kasi tinanggap nila ako. Nabigyan nila ako ng pagkakataon.”

He added, “Nu’ng nakapasok ako sa GMA, chance ko na ito, doon ko minahal nang minahal. May doubt pa ako noong umpisa na kapag hindi ako nakuha, balik na lang ako ng school, magiging chef ako, magiging kung ano man.”

His portrayal as Nathan in Tween Hearts was so convincing that after that, he was given roles in other shows like Time of My Life, Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin, Home Sweet Home, Anna Karenina, and now, Pyra Babaeng Apoy.

Teejay revealed that his stint in Pyra is somewhat an improvement from his previous roles. 

“This is my first time na makapasok sa isang love team, so iba ‘yung dating sa akin, kasi ‘yung level ko from kuya to bestfriend to a nerd, ngayon love team so feeling ko step by step, umaangat na po ‘yung nakukuha kong roles so thankful po talaga ako,” he said.
