Philippine Commission on Women ‘gravely disappointed’ over Bench show

Following the recent fashion show from Bench dubbed as “The Naked Truth,” the Philippine Commission on Women on Tuesday expressed “grave disappointment” over elements that demean and dehumanize the dignity of women.

In a statement, PCW cited one act in the said show wherein “a female model portrayed like a pet and was held on a leash by a local endorser while walking down the runway.”

According to PCW, although they understand that the fashion show is part of the marketing of the brand, treating female bodies as mere objects and commodities should not be tolerated.

Moreover, the commission condemns the commodification of male bodies that were flaunted exaggeratedly during the show, bearing comparable characteristics with that of soft porn.

Feminist groups, as well as gender equality and women empowerment advocates, have likewise condemned the offensive elements of the fashion show that “dehumanize portrayal of women.”

Senator Pia Cayetano has also expressed her thoughts regarding the disturbing photographs circulating social media. She has since talked to Ben Chan, owner of the brand, and said that “Such portrayals reinforce society’s sexist view of women, instead of contributing to the gender education of our people, especially of our youth.”

Netizens have also been disturbed by the said elements, thinking Bench's marketing “has gone too far.”

The PCW called for exercising sensitivity and promoting positive portrayal of women, citing Section 19 of the Magna Carta of Women (MCW) or the R. A. 9710, which clearly states that the portrayal of women in a discriminatory, demeaning and/or derogatory manner in advertisements, shows and programs is not allowed.

Women, according to PCW, should always be portrayed and represented with dignity, instead of as inferior beings and sexual objects.

Bench has since issued an apology regarding the matter. —Bianca Rose Dabu/KG, GMA News
