Sen. Tito Sotto says ‘No politics for AlDub’

(Updated 8:50 p.m.) The accidental and now phenomenal love team AlDub will not be seen in political campaigns in 2016, Senator Vicente Sotto III said Tuesday.

“We agreed na with the EB (Eat Bulaga) leadership. No politics for AlDub,” Sotto said in a text message sent to GMA News Online.

In fact, not even Sotto will bring the love team of Alden Richards and Yaya Dub, Maine Mendoza in real life, to his own campaign.

“I’m setting the example so others cannot insist on bringing them into their campaign,” the reelectionist senator said.

He said "Eat Bulaga" has agreed to advise Alden and Yaya Dub to refrain from accepting political endorsements or joining in the campaign.

“Napagkasunduan na namin. Kay Alden may kumakausap na presidentiable pero tumanggi na rin siya, sumusunod sa idea namin na iwas sa politics para walang kalaban,” he said.

Sotto said involvement in politics would not be good for the AlDub team.

“Kung sumama sila sa isang kandidato, gumawa ng commercial para sa isang kandidato, lahat ng kalaban n’un ayaw na sa kanila,” he said.

“E ba’t naman namin gugustuhin iyon, ang galing galing na nila, may AlDubnation, dabarkads, buong Pilipinas ang may gusto, meron pang international. Kapag nilagyan mo ng political color yan, mawawala yan,” the senator added.

Sotto and AlDub are all part of Eat Bulaga, which has seen record ratings because of its kalyeserye featuring the tandem of Mendoza and Alden.

Last Saturday, the love team’s popularity reached a new high with their first meeting, setting a new social media record with five million posts on Twitter.

Several movie and even sports personalities have been hooked on AlDub.

Ginebra players LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar, and Jayjay Helterbrand also admitted being fans of the AlDub phenomenon and had wished that Mendoza would be with the team for the opening ceremonies.

But TAPE Inc. executive vice president Malou Choa-Fagar, who helps manage the career of Mendoza, said that the Dubsmash Queen won't be a muse for any PBA team this year. —KG/BM, GMA News
