PEP: Boses, Brutus to be screened in Hawaii
Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil's Boses and Tara Illenberger's Brutus will be screened at the Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival this October. The advocacy film Boses is part of the Asian showcase of the said film fest while the environmentally inclined Brutus is in the Green Cinema section. The 28th edition of the Louis Vuitton Hawaii IFF will take place October 9-19 in Honolulu. This film fest will showcase 154 films from 36 countries this year. Boses, which stars Ricky Davao, Cherry Pie Picache, Coke Bolipata, and young violinist Julian Duque, is also eligible for the NETPAC award. The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Asian film throughout the world. The Louis Vuitton Hawaii IFF is the only film festival in North America given permission to present the NETPAC award. This December, Boses will compete at the Women's International Film and Television Showcase in West Hollywood. Yul Servo plays a rebel leader in the film Brutus, which was shot in Oriental Mindoro. He travels with two young Mangyan children (portrayed by Tim Mabalot and Rhea Medina) who are transporting illegally cut logs by drifting them down a river. In Cinemalaya 2008, Brutus won the Special Jury prize in the Full Length Feature category while Yul bagged the Best Supporting Actor award. The English-Cebuano film The Amazing Truth about Queen Raquela will also be screened in the Louis Vuitton Hawaii IFF as part of the Asian showcase. Created by filmmakers from Iceland, France, Philippines, and Thailand, Queen Raquela is about a transsexual (or "ladyboy") from the Philippines who dreams of escaping the streets of Cebu City for a fairy tale life in Paris.
