Indie films dominate 36th Gawad Urian nominations

The Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP) announced Wednesday the nominees for this year’s Gawad Urian.

 

Independent films dominated the nominations in the 36th edition of this film fest. The awards night is scheduled to take place on June 18 at the Rockwell Tent.

 

Why were there no mainstream films included in this year’s nominations.

 

“Nangibabaw lang talaga ‘yung mga pelikulang nilabas outside the studio houses,” explains Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist for Literature and MPP founding member.

 

Auraeus Solito’s Baybayin pocketed the most number of nominations with nine, including Best Director and Best Film.

 

Sisters Assunta and Alessandra de Rossi are competing against each other as they are both nominated in the Best Actress category. The movie was shown as part of the Cinema One Originals Film Festival last December 2012.

 

Set in Palawan, Baybayin talks about two half-sisters who fell in love with a deaf mute native. Both women learned the ancient Palawanon script, Baybayin, in order to communicate with their loved one.

 

Adolfo Alix’s Mater Dolorosa, also a Cinema One Originals entry, and Brillante Mendoza’s Thy Womb, which competed in the Metro Manila Film Festival, both bagged eight nominations including Best Actress, Best Director and Best Film.
