'Euphoria' star Hunter Schafer reveals undergoing gender-affirming surgery in 2025

"Euphoria" star Hunter Schafer has opened up about undergoing gender-affirming surgery in December 2025.

“I just had bottom surgery in December,” Schafer told Elle magazine, as reported by Variety on Monday.

She added it was "amazing and I love it so much."

According to Schafer, she had long embraced the gender-expansive aspects of her identity and initially wanted to explore ways to feel comfortable in her body without pursuing further medical transition.

“I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it,” she said.

But experiences in everyday life eventually led her to reconsider her approach to gender identity and medical transition, pushing ahead with the surgery.

Schafer described the ability to evolve as the “magical thing about queerness,” emphasizing the possibilities of personal growth and self-discovery.

“On an ideological level, it’s about possibility and expansion and growth, and being on that journey and finding yourself,” she said.

While Schafer previously viewed her gender identity as more fluid, she has since arrived at a clearer understanding of herself, she said.

“I’m a woman," Schafer said. "I’m a girl.”

In her Elle interview, Schafer shared details about her recovery from the surgery in early 2026, renting a spacious apartment where friends and family could visit as she followed her doctor's instructions to remain lying down.

“I think my limit was 150 steps per day, which is nothing,” she said, recalling the restrictions she faced during recovery.

Schafer came out to her parents as a gay boy when she was in the seventh grade.

Beyond playing Jules in “Euphoria,” she has appeared in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and the Neon horror movie “Cuckoo.”

She is set to star in the upcoming film “Blade Runner 2099” with Michelle Yeoh. — Jade Veronique Yap/LA, GMA News
