Patrick Stewart's final onscreen performance is 'Avengers: Doomsday,' Marvel confirms

Patrick Stewart's final onscreen role will be Professor X, Marvel Studios has confirmed, following the legendary actor's passing.

Stewart will reprise his role as Professor Charles Xavier for the upcoming film "Avengers: Doomsday."

“For more than 25 years, he brought a gravitas and profundity to the [character]… He returned to the role once more with 2026’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ his final onscreen appearance,” Marvel told Variety.

In a public statement, Marvel praised Stewart for bringing the iconic “X-Men” character to life with “extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity.”

“Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art,” it added.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18. Early teasers showed Professor X playing chess with Ian McKellen's Magneto and grasping his hand.

In one of Stewart’s final interviews, published by TV Insider in July, the actor discussed reprising his role as Charles Xavier in “Avengers: Doomsday” and assured fans that he had no plans to “retire” from acting.

“As any actor my age will tell you, there are fewer and fewer available roles as we get older. That being said, I still continue to receive interesting offers and I love being challenged by new work,” Stewart said in the interview.

“I can’t imagine ever officially retiring. I’ll always and forever be an actor.”

Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles following a brief illness involving Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. He was 86.

Beyond his iconic portrayal of Professor X in the “X-Men” franchise, Stewart also appeared in other Marvel films, including “Logan,” “The Wolverine,” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” He was likewise best known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and Ebenezer Scrooge in the television film “A Christmas Carol.” —Jade Veronique Yap/JCB, GMA News
