'The Matrix' director formerly known as Larry Wachowski debuts as Lana

"Hi, I'm Lana," said “The Matrix” director formerly known as Larry Wachowski, 47, in a movie promo held last week in Los Angeles, California. Wachowski, who had a sex-change operation, wore a gray dress and fuchsia dreadlocks.

Lana Wachowski was with her brother Andy Wachowski and director Tom Tywker during the movie promo for their new sci-fi movie, "Cloud Atlas," starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry.

According to the New York Post, "it is unclear if the director’s sex change is complete, but Wachowski says she has been “'transitioning' from male to female for years."

Her new movie, credited under her new name Lana Wachowski, together with two others, was the first public appearance of the Hollywood director since the male-to-female transition.
The Wachowski siblings are best known for writing, directing, and producing the 1999 movie "The Matrix" starring Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves. They also co-wrote the hit movie's sequels “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions.”

Lana Wachowski decided to make the public appearance last week for her film and not to talk about her private life, a report in thescreeningroom.ca said.

"In 2002, Wachowski was going through a bitter divorce from wife Thea Bloom, as People magazine reported at the time. In 2003, a date Wachowski took to the Cannes Film Festival told the British tabloids that the director was a 'cross-dresser," reported the Huffington Post.

The paper also reported that in the same year, movie journalist Dave Poland wrote a column for the Gothamist saying, "Every indication I have says that Larry Wachowski is now in the process of changing his sex."

Poland added that Wachowski was "dressing in public like a woman, taking female hormones and yes, having a sex change operation."

The Wachowski siblings also wrote and directed the 1996 movie “Bound,” a story about two lesbian lovers planning to steal millions of stashed money and pin the blame on a boyfriend.

According to tribute.ca, "both Andy and Larry Wachowski ranked 27 in Premiere’s 2003 annual Power 100 List, after ranking 89 in 2002." –KG, GMA News
