Disney plans to develop live-action ‘Mulan’ – report

After the success of the live-action retelling of "Cinderella," Walt Disney Studios is reportedly in the process of bringing to life another beloved "Disney princess": Mulan.

According to a report on Hollywood Reporter, Disney bought a script by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that revolves around Hua Mulan, who was the basis for the main character of the studios' 1998 animated film.

The 1998 hit is centered on a young woman named Fa Mulan who disguises herself as a man so she could take her father's place in the army and go to war. She then becomes a skilled warrior and is eventually hailed as a heroine.

"Mulan" earned $304.3 million worldwide and received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. This includes the Golden Globe for Best Original Song for "Reflection", which was performed by Lea Salonga, Fa Mulan's singing voice (Mulan's speaking voice was provided by US actress Ming-Na Wen).

For the past years, Disney has been retelling their classic animated films with live-action versions. The studio's most recent venture was "Cinderella," starring Lily James, released three weeks ago.

Disney is also creating a live-action film of "Beauty and the Beast," starring British actors Emma Watson and Dan Steven in the title roles. It is expected to hit theaters on March 17, 2017.

In 2016, Disney is also set to release a new version of "The Jungle Book" and a sequel to "Alice in Wonderland." A live-action version of "Dumbo" to be directed by Tim Burton is also in the works. — Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News
