Horror anthology ‘XX’ directed by ‘4 killer women’
The trailer for horror anthology “XX” is out, and it looks like a spine-tingling trip into the macabre worlds envisioned by four talented women directors.
“XX is a new all-female helmed horror anthology featuring four dark tales written and directed by fiercely talented women,” says the movie’s synopsis. The four stories and their respective directors are as follows:
- “The Box” is directed by Jovanka Vuckovic, who directed the 2012 short horror film “The Captured Bird.” This movie was executively produced by Guillermo del Toro.
- “Birthday Party” is directed by singer/songwriter Annie Clark, better known by her stage name St. Vincent.
- “Don’t Fall” is directed by Roxanne Benjamin, who directed and co-wrote “Siren,” one of the stories in the 2015 horror anthology film “Southbound.”
- “Her Only Living Son” is directed by Karyn Kusama. Kusama is also no stranger to horror; she directed 2015’s “The Invitation” and 2009’s “Jennifer’s Body” starring Megan Fox. She also directed 2000’s sports drama movie “Girlfight” starring Michelle Rodriguez.
The “XX” project was initiated by Vuckovic and Todd Brown.
“We created ‘XX’ because there were no all-women horror anthologies,” Vuckovic told movie site Comingsoon.net. She and collaborator Brown had noticed that women were “passed over” for directing jobs in other horror anthologies, so decided to set up their own project.
“‘XX’ is a direct response to the lack of opportunities for women in film – in the horror genre in particular,” she said,
“XX” will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, which is set to take place from January 19 to 29. It will be released on VOD and select theaters on February 17. — BM, GMA News
