‘Jane the Virgin’ star to voice Carmen Sandiego in new Netflix series
One of the most popular video game properties of the 80’s is getting an animated series to its name.
Netflix has ordered a 22-episode series of “Carmen Sandiego,” with “Jane The Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez providing the voice of the titular character. Actor Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”) will co-star as “the player,” serving as Carmen’s “chief accomplice and friend.”
The show will focus on Carmen's origins and follow her on her international capers.
According to i09, the new series will be run by “The Batman” showrunner Duane Capizzi, who also serves as executive producer alongside CJ Kettler and Caroline Fraser.
The character first appeared—as a villainess—in the educational video game “Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?” created by Brøderbund in 1985. The player goes on the trail of one of Carmen's henchmen, who has stolen a precious item. To catch him—and, eventually, Carmen—the player has to search around the world and solve mysteries and riddles that give them clues as to the whereabouts of the master thief.
One of the most popular games series in the world, “Carmen Sandiego” has spawned a growing franchise consisting of spin-offs, comics, tabletop games, and even films and television series that preceded the upcoming one picked up by Netflix.
