Eddie Redmayne contradicts J.K. Rowling: 'Trans women are women, trans men are men'
Eddie Redmayne has spoken up against J.K. Rowling's controversial statements on gender identity.
In a statement to Variety, the "Fantastic Beasts" actor said, "I disagree with Jo's comments."
"As someone who has worked with both J.K. Rowling and members of the trans community, I wanted to make it absolutely clear where I stand," he added. "Trans women are women, trans men are men and non-binary identities are valid."
Redmayne went on to say that he would "never want to speak on behalf of the community" but is aware that his transgender friends and colleagues are "tired of this constant questioning of their identities, which all too often results in violence and abuse."
"They simply want to live their lives peacefully, and it’s time to let them do so," he added.
The English actor starred as Newt Scamander in the "Harry Potter" spin-off film series "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" created by Rowling.
Rowling has been the target of criticism after arguing that the discussion of gender identity "erases the concept of sex."
"If sex isn't real, there's not same-sex attraction. If sex isn't real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn't hate to speak the truth," she said.
"Harry Potter" stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have also spoken up in support of the trans community following Rowling's comments.
Following the backlash, the 54-year-old author defended her right to speak about trans issues, and revealed that she was a survivor of domestic abuse and sexual assault.
