Will Smith issues public apology to the Academy, Chris Rock following slapping incident

Will Smith on Tuesday issued a public apology to the Academy and Chris Rock following the slapping incident which took place at the awards event.

"Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive," he wrote in the statement. "My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable."

"Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally," he added."

Will apologized to Chris whom he slapped in the face on stage after making a joke about his wife Jada Smith's shaved head appearance at the 94th Academy Awards.

In 2018, Jada bared a bald spot on her head after opening up about her struggles with Alopecia.

"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong," he wrote in his statement.

Will admitted that he is "embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be."

"There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness," he added.

Aside from Chris, Will also apologized to "the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world."

"I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family," he added.

Will said he deeply regrets "that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us."

"I am a work in progress," he ended his note.

Following the slapping incident, Will accepted his first Oscar trophy as he also apologized to the Academy in his tearful speech.

The Academy also issued a statement saying that they do not "condone violence of any form." —JAB, GMA News.
