‘Lumpia with a Vengeance’ will have its grand premiere at San Diego Comic Con!

“Lumpia with a Vengeance,” the sequel to the comedy and action-filled cult classic “Lumpia” will have its grand premiere at the Super Bowl of comic cons—that’s right, at the San Diego Comic Con or SDCC.

“Lumpia with a Vengeance” tells the story of Kuya (Mark Muñoz), a hero with an unlikely weapon—lumpia. He appears in Fogtown, where the residents are mostly Filipino, to prevent a shady crime syndicate from destroying their town.

True to the Filipino bayanihan spirit, the sequel is crowd-funded through Kickstarter and brought to life by a Filipino-American team and cast. Danny Trejo from the “Machete” films is part of the cast as well.

In a 2020 interview with GMA News Online, director and writer Patricio Ginelsa said because of the pandemic, the movie’s premiere was canceled. However, that time was used to polish and improve the movie.

“I can only hope others find the final product ‘beautiful.’ But just witnessing the community rallying behind us to create this has already been a beautiful experience,” he said.

According to the SDCC blog, the creatives behind the film will also have a panel titled The Astonishing Origin of the Deep Fried Universe & the Uncanny LUMPIA Wrappers! on July 21.

Director Ginelsa, stars Mark Muñoz, April Absynth, Darion Basco, Katrina Dimaranan, and Edward Baon, producers Lawrence Iriarte and Patrick Micheal Strange, plus artists Gerald Pilare, Vania Hardy, and Patrick Ballesteros will take part in it. They’ll reveal behind-the-scenes secrets, how representation and community building play a vital role in their film, and discuss the accompanying comic book series “Legendary Lumpia Squad.”

Those who attend the panel will be treated to a free print and film screening too.

The cast and crew will also have an afterparty, comic book and autograph signings, as well as photo sessions at the convention.

The film previously had successful screenings at Comic-Con Special Edition, WonderCon, and film festivals.
