Millie Bobby Brown slams media for comments on her appearance: 'This is bullying'
Millie Bobby Brown took to Instagram to call out the media outlets who have published articles commenting on her appearance.
The "Stranger Things" star addressed the issue on Instagram, days after her appearance at the 97th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, saying that she felt it necessary to speak out because it is "something that affects every young woman who grows up under public scrutiny."
"I started in this industry when I was 10 years old. I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, people can’t seem to grow with me," she said. “Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time, like I should still look the way I did on ‘Stranger Things’ Season 1. And because I don’t, I’m now a target.”
The actress then named recent articles by writers "who are so desperate to tear young women down.”
Among them are headlines such as "Why are Gen Zers like Millie Bobby Brown ageing so badly?", "What has Millie Bobby Brown done to her face?", and "Millie Bobby Brown mistaken for someone’s mom as she guides younger sister Ava through LA."
“This isn’t journalism. This is bullying,” Millie said. “The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, it’s disturbing.”
“The fact that some of these articles are written by women? Even worse,” she added.
Millie also said that there are always talks about supporting and uplifting young women, but then “tear them down for clicks.”
The actress then said she refuses to apologize or change her appearance just to fit societal expectations.
“I refuse to apologize for growing up. I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can’t handle seeing a girl become a woman. I will not be shamed for how I look, how I dress, or how I present myself,” she said.
“If you have a problem with that, I have to wonder—what is it that actually makes you so uncomfortable?” she added.
She ended her statement by saying, “Let’s do better. Not just for me, but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without fear of being torn apart for simply existing. Thank you.”
Millie is set to return as Eleven in the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things.” Production started in 2024.
She also starred in the films “Damsel” and “Enola Holmes.”
Millie got married to Jon Bon Jovi’s son, Jake Bongiovi, in 2024.
