NBA: Ben Wallace breaks record for games played by undrafted player
While most of the basketball universe has their eyes turned to the undrafted Jeremy Lin, on the same night the Taiwanese-American led his squad to a sixth straight win, another undrafted player was making headlines of a more subtle and longer type. Detroit Piston Ben Wallace broke the record for most games played by an undrafted player when he checked in during the first quarter of a 99-95 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time) at the Palace at Auburn Hills, the Pistons' Twitter account (@detroitpistons) confirmed. Wallace's 1,055 games broke the record, appropriately enough, of Avery Johnson, who retired from the NBA as a Spur and is now the New Jersey Nets' head coach. The 38-year-old undersized center is a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a five-time NBA All-Defensive First Team member. Wallace, originally signed by the Washington Bullets as a free agent, got traded to the Orlando Magic, before making his way to the Pistons in the trade for Grant Hill. As a Piston, Wallace was a part of the 2003-04 championship team that defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. A 16-year veteran, Wallace has career averages of 5.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1.3 steals. He recently told the Detroit News that he plans to retire at the end of this season. — JVP, GMA News
