NBA: Stephen Curry sets three-pointer record as Warriors clinch sixth seed
Stephen Curry set a new record for three-point shots made in the NBA’s regular season as his Golden State Warriors defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 99-88, Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon.
Curry had a hard time making baskets in the game, converting a total of 5-of-16, but he made the shots that mattered, giving him the new record with 272 triples, besting Ray Allen's mark of 269 during the 05-06 season with the Seattle Supersonics.
More importantly, the win clinched the sixth seed for the Golden State Warriors, setting up a first-round playoffs meeting with the Denver Nuggets.
Curry connected with his first three-point shot of the ball game at the 6:55 mark of the first quarter to tie Allen’s record. Curry then swished a 26-foot three-pointer from the right wing off a Carl Landry pass to set a new record. He broke Allen’s record on less attempts as his three-point shooting percentage is at 45.3% after the record-setting shot while Allen’s was only 41.2%
The Warriors looked like they were on their way to an easy win as they built a 50-36 advantage at the half. However, Portland fought back thanks largely to the efforts of LaMarcus Aldridge, who scored 30 points in the game on 12-of-23 shooting from the field while adding 21 rebounds.
The Blazers outscored the visitors 27-16 in the third to make it a ball game, but Curry came to the rescue in the fourth period to preserve the win for Golden State.
Curry added another triple at the 9:18 mark of the fourth quarter to give the Warriors a 74-67 lead. He then scored on another three-point shot with 3:56 left in the game for a comfortable 91-77 lead.
Klay Thompson led the Warriors with 24 points while David Lee added 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The seventh overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft also set another record as he became the first player to drain at least 250 three point shots while also dishing out more than 500 assists in the regular season. - CLP, GMA News
