NBA: Detroit Pistons bring back iconic point guard Chauncey Billups - report
The Detroit Pistons will bring back one of their most well-known and well-loved players, point guard Chauncey Billups, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported Thursday.
The 36-year-old Billups hopes to retire in Detroit, agreeing to a two-year deal worth over $5 million, Wojnarwoski said.
Billups helped the Pistons win a title in 2004, and was named Finals MVP, carving out a reputation as "Mr. Big Shot." The five-time All Star though was traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2008 for Allen Iverson, before getting traded again, this time as part of the Carmelo Anthony deal, to New York, in 2011.
The Knicks then used the amnesty clause on him in 2011, buying out his contract. That allowed the Los Angeles Clippers to pick him up, but an Achilles tear nearly ended his career, though he came back for the 2012-13 season with the Clips on a one-year deal.
Billups however played just 22 games last season, putting up 8.4 points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 19 minutes per game. The league still honored him though with the inaugural Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award, given to recognize the league's "ideal teammate."
The former third overall pick in the 1997 draft will likely help mentor the young Pistons guards, and could even serve as an unofficial player-coach.
Former teammate Rasheed Wallace is reportedly set to become an assistant coach with the team as well. - AMD, GMA News
