PBA: League fines Rain or Shine P2 million for aborted walkout
(Updated 12:28pm) The PBA has fined the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters the sum of P2 million for their aborted walkout during game six of the 2013-14 PBA Philippine Cup Finals, the league announced Friday on Twitter.
The fine is the biggest ever doled out by the PBA. Previously, the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters had been fined P1 million, also for a walkout, back in 2010.
The statement released by the PBA said that after a meeting with Rain or Shine team owners Raymond Yu and Terry Que, plus the franchise’s Board Governor Atty. Mamerto Mondragon, Head Coach Yen Guiao and Team Manager Boy Lapid, “it was made clear by Coach Guiao that it [the walkout] was not a premeditated move on the part of the ballclub” and that it was “his [Guiao’s] own decision to leave the playing court with the players.”

Because the team did manage to return within the 15-minute window allotted by the league, the franchise was thus fined P2 million, and not the full P10 million penalty.
The statement added that the league feels that “walkouts can never be condoned.
“A walkout represents a total disregard of the principles and values we want our players and teams to zealously uphold: sportsmanship and the tenet that public and fan interest is paramount.”
The incident occurred with 11:39 to play in the second quarter, after Guiao felt that the referees whistled three successive bad calls against his squad.
When the team returned from the locker room, they were assessed a warning for delay of game.
Guiao is no stranger to walkouts, having led one in the postseason as well back in 2006 when he was coach of Red Bull Barako. The penalty was significantly smaller back then, just P500,000, with P100,000 to be paid directly by Guiao.
