The San Miguel Beermen have now won two straight in the 2014 PBA Commissioner's Cup, most recently destroying Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 112-96, on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Josh Boone, in what is widely rumored as his last game with the Beermen, led the team with 32 points, 21 rebounds and two blocks. Arwind Santos and Marcio Lassiter had 18 and 16 points, respectively, while Sol Mercado added 14 points and four assists.

"This is the kind of game na gusto namin; ito yung direction na pupuntahan namin," said head coach Biboy Ravanes. "And with this game, na-gauge namin yung level namin because Ginebra is one of the best teams. Thank God our team passed with flying colors." He added that the win was a good way to celebrate Chris Ross' birthday tonight. The point guard put up seven points and six assists.

"Before we only used to play 36 minutes, now we play the game for 48 minutes," said Ravanes, praising his team's effort.

San Miguel outscored Ginebra on the break, 24-2. They also put up 25 turnover points against Ginebra's eight, working off a 9-16 advantage in turnovers. "We're not trying to create a helter-skelter system like the Phoenix Suns, but we're just trying to be opportunistic with our chances to run," clarified consultant Todd Purves.

"I'm happy with the final score but it's the second game of the conference. You can't get too high or too low," added Purves. "I look forward to teaching them as much as I can, together with my coaching staff, moving forward."

Purves however declined to say whether Boone's strong play will result in his tenure as San Miguel import would be extended. The squad reportedly brought in another import, Kevin Jones, earlier this weekend.

Between Marcio Lassiter's streaky shooting and Sol Mercado's playmaking, San Miguel couldn't miss from the field. While forcing Ginebra to earn their points on the other end, the Beermen ran up a 15-point lead late in the first. Literally everything was falling for the Beermen, as Ronald Tubid connected on a long heave as the quarter buzzer sounded, 37-23.

Ginebra got the game back to within single digits as Leon Rodgers attacked the rim and scored from the line, 36-45. It would be the closest they would get, though, before spotty inside defense betrayed them the rest of the way. The Beermen went on a 13-8 rally in the last four minutes, capped by back-to-back finishes by Rico Maierhofer, to lead 58-44 at halftime.

Josh Boone carried the Beermen in the third, scoring off putbacks or cutting to the rim to extend the lead to 17 points, 66-49. LA Tenorio and Mark Caguioa connected on triples to arrest the skid, while Rodgers and Chris Ellis carved space inside to score. The Beermen, reliant on Boone's putbacks to a fault, saw their lead dwindle to 78-68 after three quarters.

Rodgers got the first bucket of the fourth period to get Ginebra within single digits, but the Beermen quashed the budding rally. Paolo Hubalde and Arwind Santos hit consecutive buckets, while the rest of the Beermen went cherry-picking in transition during a 19-6 blitz, 97-76, putting them comfortably ahead with six minutes remaining in the game.

For the second straight game, June Mar Fajardo sat out with an ankle injury.

The Beermen shot well, making 44-of-89 (49.2 percent) from the field, while permitting Ginebra to convert 34-of-77 (44.2 percent). San Miguel, leading 53-44 in rebounding, put up a 22-13 advantage in second-chance points.

Leon Rodgers scored 33 points, including a 15-of-20 feat from the free throw line, to go with 11 rebounds and five assists. Mark Caguioa and Greg Slaughter had 15 and 13 points respectively, and combined for 11 rebounds. Chris Ellis scattered 10 points and six boards. - RAF, GMA News
