NBA: John Stockton an option for Jazz

Beloved point guard John Stockton could be one of dozens of candidates to become head coach of the Utah Jazz.

General manager Dennis Lindsey did not deny Stockton was a candidate. Stockton has not been a head coach at any level. That puts him on even footing with Steve Kerr, who just agreed to terms with the Golden State Warriors. The Jazz were reportedly interested in Kerr as well.

Kerr did serve as Phoenix Suns general manager before returning to broadcasting.

Chicago Bulls assistant coach Adrian Griffin, veteran coach Quin Snyder and former Utah coach and longtime NBA assistant Jim Boylen, currently with the San Antonio Spurs, have been mentioned as potential options for the Jazz in what is expected to be a wide-reaching search.

Tyrone Corbin was not retained for next season after coaching out the entirety of his contract in 2013-14.

Corbin took the job in February 2011 when longtime coach Jerry Sloan retired after 23 years. He compiled a 112-146 record that included one playoff appearance in 2012 and a second winning season in 2012-13 (43-39). But the Jazz struggled to a 25-57 record this season, the franchise's worst mark since 1981-82.

"The decision to make impactful changes in our organization is never taken lightly," Jazz owner Greg Miller said. "Ty has always represented the Jazz franchise in a first-class manner both on the court and in the community. He did a wonderful job of building relationships with the players and encouraged their growth throughout the season. We wish Ty, Dante and their family nothing but the very best for their future."

Corbin, 51, enjoyed a long playing career in the NBA that extended from the 1985-86 through the 2000-01 seasons. He served as an assistant coach for the Jazz from 2004 to 2011 before he was promoted to replace Sloan. - Reuters
