NBA: A look back at the Spurs' five championships
The San Antonio Spurs are once again wearing the NBA crown, winning the championship for the fifth time by beating the two-time defending champs Miami Heat in game five.
Here is a look at their five titles since 1999:
- 1999: San Antonio struggled in the first month of the lockout-shortened season, but eventually took off and could not be stopped. The Spurs clinched the title on Avery Johnson's jump shot with 47 seconds left in game five, giving them an 78-77 victory over the New York Knicks. Tim Duncan was named Finals MVP, averaging 27.4 points, 14 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in the series. David Robinson also made his presence known, averaging 16.6 points and 11.8 rebounds. San Antonio became the first former ABA team to win the NBA title. One of its players, starting forward Sean Elliott, played despite needing a kidney transplant.
- 2003: The Spurs, fueled by a 19-0 fourth quarter scoring surge, defeated the New Jersey Nets 88-77 to win their second NBA championship. Tim Duncan gave a performance for the ages, scoring 20 points to go with 20 rebounds, 10 assists and eight blocked shots. David Robinson also added 13 points and 17 rebounds in the final game of his illustrious Spurs career.
- 2005: Tim Duncan claimed his third Finals MVP in as many appearances as the Spurs defeated the Detroit Pistons 81-74 to capture a third title. Duncan paced the attack with 25 points, including 12 in the third period, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Robert Horry scored 15 points, while Manu Ginobili added 23 points, five rebounds and a team-high four assists. Horry collected his sixth title, becoming one of only 12 players with at least six championship rings.
- 2007: Finals MVP Tony Parker scored 24 points, Manu Ginobili had 27, including 13 in the fourth quarter, and the Spurs moved in among the NBA's greatest franchises with an 83-82 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. With their fourth championship since 1999 - and third in five years - the Spurs joined the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls as the only teams in NBA history to win four titles.
- 2014: Top-seeded San Antonio beat the Miami Heat in five games to claim their fifth NBA championship. After the Spurs landed in Miami following a game two loss at home they injected new life into their championship bid with two blowout wins on the road before returning home for another lopsided victory to win the series 4-1.
