NBA: Spurs free agent Patty Mills hurts shoulder, out seven months - report

Free agent point guard Patty Mills, who came off the bench to help the San Antonio Spurs shoot down the Miami Heat and win a fifth championship, will miss up to the next seven months due to surgery to repair his right rotator cuff, Chris Dutton of The Canberra Times reported, Wednesday.

According to the report, Mills “played through the pain during the season and scans revealed the wear and tear injury just two weeks after” he helped the Spurs win the title.

Making matters worse, Mills is an unrestricted free agent, and had drawn plenty of interest from teams like the New York Knicks and the Heat.

Mills also won’t be able to represent Australia in the upcoming FIBA World Cup in August.

“It was a shock, but I knew something was wrong with my shoulder. I had pain during the season,” Mills told Dutton. “You think nothing can deflate you after a championship but this is sinking in. I think it might affect [free agency].”

During the 2013-14 regular season, Mills saw action in all but one game, norming 10.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists while shooting 42.5 percent from beyond the arc. His numbers dipped slightly to 7.3 points, 1.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists in the postseason, but he was big in the Finals, scoring 14 and 17 points in limited minutes in games four and five.

Overall, in the five-game series, he was 13-of-23 from beyond the arc, including 5-of-8 in the clinching game five.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Mills will likely be out until March, but the Spurs still want to re-sign him, though he most certainly won’t make as much money as he would have without the injury. - AMD, GMA News
