The Purefoods Star Hotshots erased an 18-point deficit in the second half to come out with an 81-75 win over the GlobalPort Batang Pier on Friday at the SMART- Araneta Coliseum.

Mark Barroca led Purefoods with 25 points, while Alein Maliksi chipped in 20 for the Hotshots, who won for the first time in the tournament. Last season's Grand Slam champions had lost their first two games of the new season.

Marc Pingris, in his first game back for Purefoods since his Gilas Pilipinas stint, added nine points and 17 rebounds.

Stanley Pringle scored 12 points in the first quarter to give GlobalPort a comfortable lead after one, 26-15. Batang Pier padded their lead in the second, while limiting Purefoods to nine points in the period, to take a commanding 40-24 lead into the break.

It was a different story in the second half, as Purefoods slowly trimmed the deficit, sinking jumpers while forcing Batang Pier to miss from the perimeter. A Mark Barroca trey halfway through the quarter cut the lead to single digits, 48-40, before Allein Maliksi found his rhythm. After three quarters, Purefoods was only down two, 50-48.

Just when Pingris and Yousef Taha nudged Purefoods ahead in the fourth, Alex Cabagnot countered with eight straight, creating separation. A five-point swing thanks to Justin Melton and Barroca knotted things up at 70-all entering the final two minutes.

A Maliksi drive forced GlobalPort to call for time with 75 seconds left in the game. Alex Cabagnot committed a turnover, though, leading to a Pingris three-point play and a five-point lead with 42 seconds remaining, 75-70.

Mark Barroca then secured two free throws, cancelling a Mark Isip make to keep a four-point lead, 77-73.

GlobalPort then played the fouling game, but Barroca nailed two more to erase a Pringle basket. A late buzzer-beating alleyoop from Purefoods settled the final score.

The Batang Pier dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
