'Living Legend' Robert Jaworski open to coaching Gilas Pilipinas
Philippine basketball Living Legend Robert Jaworski expressed openness to take over the helm of Gilas Pilipinas as executives of the country's basketball federation begin the search for a new national coach.
"It's gonna be a tough job, but I think taking a serious look at it is not a bad idea, because it's a calling," said Jaworski in a report on GMA News TV's "Balitanghali."
Jaworski led the Philippines to a silver medal finish in the 1990 Asian Games, but has been out of coaching since running for the Senate in 1998.
The Gilas post is vacant after the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas organized a committee to search for a new coach and new members of the team.
Chot Reyes, who has been at the helm of the Gilas program since 2012, has withdrawn his name from consideration for the post.
The SBP committee will convene this month to come up with a shortlist of candidates for the coaching spot in time for the federation's December meeting.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud, who will be part of the committee, said that the process proves the strength of the relationship between the SBP and the country's basketball stakeholders.
"We are very excited about this process kasi it gives all the stakeholders a channel to participate in," he said. — JST, GMA News
