Buckingham Palace has absolved NBA King LeBron James over a supposed row on royal protocol when he put his arm around Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, after an NBA game earlier this week.

Ohio-based news site Cleveland.com cited an email from a media communications officer of the Royal Palace in London, where she said there is "no such thing as Royal protocol."

"When members of the Royal Family meet people they want them to feel as comfortable as possible... There is no such thing as Royal protocol," it quoted the email from Laura King, senior communications officer for Buckingham Palace, as saying in the email to the Northeast Ohio Media Group.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge very much enjoyed their time in the US, including attending the NBA game and meeting LeBron," she added.

Last Tuesday, James - nicknamed the King - met with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after they watched his Cleveland Cavaliers win over the Brooklyn Nets.

But the supposed protocol breach occurred after James presented the royal couple with a special Cavs jersey No. 7 (Cambridge), and another jersey for their 16-month-old son George (George, No. 1) - when James put an arm around the Duchess.

Several UK media outlets described the act as a possible breach in etiquette, though they also noted the Duchess appeared in good spirits.

Meanwhile, James remained silent about the supposed row, but on Thursday posted what appeared to be a manipulated photo of the royal couple's son George wearing the Number 1 jersey he gave the couple.

"My lil guy Prince George was excited about our win last night as well so he wanted to run around this am. Lol. #Royalty #StriveForGreatness #TheLandFollow" he said on his Instagram account.  — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
