For Paul Lee, Rain or Shine's loss to Alaska in Game 5 of the semifinals boiled down to falling to the trap of living and dying by the three.
"Masyado kaming na-in-love sa three-points," said the combo guard, who shot 1-of-5 from beyond the arc himself. "Hindi namin na-attack 'yung basket."
The Elasto Painters shot 39 attempts from three-point territory, draining only 10 with the most coming in the first half. Top gunner Jeff Chan and guard Jonathan Uyloan fired the most treys with identical 2-of-8 shooting clips, while big men Beau Belga and JR Quinahan had 2-of-5 apiece.
The only players who did not try for a three-pointer are center Raymond Almazan, Jervy Cruz, and Ryan Arana.
Coach Yeng Guiao, however, did not take issue with his team's attempts from rainbow country.
"We're not consciously trying to win the game shooting threes," the fiery coach said. "But the guys know that I want them to shoot the shot if it's available."
Among the final four teams, Rain or Shine actually has the most three-point attempts in the semifinals series with 130, nailing only 32 to rank third in shooting percentage.
The 29 missed shots on Saturday hurt Rain or Shine, who has had trouble rebounding the entire conference. The Aces, the top rebounding team in the semis, won the battle of the boards 65-52.
"The days that they don't miss so much, it's hard for us to rebound. But we're able to get the offensive glass tonight and beat them up," said Alaska big man Eric Menk.
The Painters were ahead by as many as 19 points, 37-18, but the Aces were able to climb back converting from their turnovers. Alaska had 20 points off Rain or Shine's errors compared to RoS' eight.
With the loss, the Painters have to win the next two games to enter the finals. Guiao, however, is still confident with his team's chances.
"I don't think we can establish these leads if we're not capable of winning the game," he said. "I have the highest confidence that we're capable and we can find a way to win the series." - RAF, GMA News
