The Kia Carnival scored their first victory in the Commissioner's Cup on Wednesday with an 88-78 stunner of San Miguel Beer, the champion of the recently-concluded Philippine Cup.

"Medyo off lang yung SMB ngayon, one week pa lang sila nageensayo, import nila kararating lang," said Kia assistant coach Chito Victolero. "Blessing din sa amin, alam naman natin pag nakondisyon na mga players nila mahirap sila talunin."

Behind 7-foot-3 import Peter John Ramos, Kia took control early, taking a 46-35 halftime lead.

The Beermen then mounted a comeback in the fourth, uncorking a 14-2 blast to cut the lead to two, 69-67, with 7:17 left.

Kia suffered a blow a few moments later when Ramos picked up his sixth personal foul with 4:37 left in the match.

LA Revilla then strung freethrows together, while Kyle Pascual found his rhythm to bump the lead back up to nine, 79-70, with less than four minutes remaining.

Chris Lutz and June Mar Fajardo tried to pull San Miguel closer in the final two minutes, but JR Cawaling, Leo Avenido and Mike Burtscher trickled in much-needed insurance baskets to bump the lead back up to 12 with 30 ticks left, ensuring the victory.

"That's our problem before, how we finish," Victolero added. "I'm very happy. Credit to the players, the locals stepped up. Magandang panalo yung binigay sa amin."

PJ Ramos led the Carnival with 22 points and eight rebounds, while LA Revilla was efficient off the bench with 12 markers, six assists and five rebounds in a little less than 23 minutes of play. Mark Yee was instrumental with 11 points and nine boards, while JR Cawaling and Leo Avenido added 10 and nine, respectively.

Victolero was all praises for his locals, who converted on clutch baskets down the stretch:

"Si Leo Avenido yung veteran na guard, malaking bagay sa guard rotation namin, si Cawaling, si Mark Yee plus si LA Revilla at si Buensuceso, everybody stepped up. Kami we work hard everyday. One game at a time lang yung focus namin. Sa middle ng conference makikita namin kung san kami."

Ronald Roberts had 18 points and 22 rebounds for San Miguel, while June Mar Fajardo had 18 and eight. Arwind Santos had just seven makes in 23 attempts for 14 points. —Renee Fopalan/JST, GMA News
