FILOIL FLYING V PRESEASON CUP

Hot-shooting San Beda win back-to-back games

Defending pre-season cup champions San Beda College (SBC) Red Lions relied on their hot shooting from beyond the arc to capture back-to-back victories in the FilOil Flying V Premier Cup.

The Red Lions won their debut match in this year’s competition in high fashion, trouncing the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors, 94-72, last Thursday.

San Beda continued their winning form as they defeated fellow National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) squad Lyceum Philippines University Pirates, 84-72, in the second game on Friday.

In both games, the men from Mendiola lit it up from long distance to convert 24 of their 50 total attempts in their first two matches in the pre-season collegiate cage tilt.

Sophomore guard A.C. Soberano played a vital role in the hot performance of San Beda with 11 treys sank from 15 attempts in two games to lift his squad to a 2-0 win-loss card.

According to San Beda head coach Jamike Jarin, he does not mind his players taking a lot of shots from downtown in spite of seeing inconsistencies in the performances.

“As long as it’s a good shot and it goes in, I don’t have a problem with it,” Jarin explained after their convincing 12-point rout of the Lyceum Pirates.

Jarin mentioned that consistency is something that they particularly need to look into in their coming games in order to achieve their bid of defending their crown.

“We didn’t really play consistent today. We were consistent in being inconsistent today. But we were able to find our shots,” he said.

Consequently, he stressed that he is pleased with the improvement of his team but held that there is still a lot of work to be done as part of their preparation for the upcoming NCAA season.

“I’m happy that we improved physically and skills wise. It’s just for us to maintain and be ready for the upcoming NCAA wars,” he concluded.

San Beda are currently 2-0 in the standings in Group A, which also houses De La Salle University, UE, Mapua Institute of Technology, Colegio de San Juan Letran, Ateneo de Manila University, Adamson University and Lyceum.
