NU Lady Bulldogs dominate UST Tigresses to complete sixth season sweep


The National University women's basketball team dominated the University of Santo Tomas to complete their sixth season sweep, 66-54, in Game 2 of the UAAP Women's Basketball finals Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Despite the absence of mythical five member Jack Animam, it was all NU from wire-to-wire.

The Sampaloc-based ladies gave their all during the final frame, limiting the Tigresses to just two points in the first five minutes of the final period. The España-based squad closed the third period with just a 10-point deficit, 46-36.

UST tried to cut their deficit with a 15-point performance in the second frame to end the first half at 36-23. The Lady Bulldogs opened the game with a 25-8 explosion to end the first frame.

Monique del Carmen, who was named Finals MVP, listed 15 points in this game, and averaged 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in the best-of-three series. Fellow senior Kaye Pingol also contributed 15 points and five rebounds.

For UST, Reynalyn Ferrer scored 16 while season MVP Grace Irebu was the only other player who scored in double figures with 11 points.

This is NU’s 96th straight win to capture their sixth straight title.
