Abueva recommended for pro license reinstatement after completing GAB code of ethics seminar

Calvin Abueva is a step closer to the reinstatement of his professional playing license.

In a report released by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) on Wednesday, the agency said Abueva already finished a series of seminars on a professional athlete's code of conduct which started last October 5.

It was also revealed that the Phoenix forward "presented a fundamental understanding of the conduct and ethical expectations of professional athletes but might have the need for supplementary assistance and guidance from the team management to ensure consistent reinforcement."

As part of the evaluation, the Board had separate discussions with Phoenix interim head coach Topex Robinson, team manager Paolo Bugia, and Abueva's former coach Alan Trinidad regarding Abueva's status.

According to the report, "the three were unanimous in affirming that they have seen a significant transformation in Abueva since resources have been made available to aid him in his road towards reformation and recovery."

"The three were consistent in stating that Abueva's childlike manner may have caused him to get misunderstood by many since his on-court play style is quite aggressive given that his skills we're not scientifically-acquired but rather developed by playing in rough community settings," it added.

Completing the assessment, the report said, "Based on compliance to the documentary requirements and results of the post-seminar evaluation, reinstatement of his professional license is therefore recommended, subject to the conditions and approval of the Board."

The report did not say if Abueva already had a drug test, which is the other condition imposed by GAB to get his license back.

Abueva is inside the Philippine Basketball Association's bubble in Pampanga while waiting for the league's go signal on the lifting of his suspension.

"The Beast" was suspended by the PBA in June last year after separate incidents with TNT import Terrence Jones and the girlfriend of an opposing player.
