Chris Gavina named Rain or Shine head coach, Caloy Garcia appointed as head of basketball operations
Rain or Shine has reshuffled its coaching staff ahead of the PBA's 46th season.
According to a report on the league website, assistant coach Chris Gavina was named as the new head tactician of the Elasto Painters.
Caloy Garcia, who has steered the team since 2016, was appointed as active consultant and head of basketball operations.
"Coach Caloy will take care of the macro and see and find ways on how to improve the team while coach Chis will take care of the micro, which means he'll be calling the shots in the game and preparations of the team," said Team owner Raymond Yu.
He said Rain or Shine's move is to address "the new landscape of basketball."
Yu added that Garcia's duties as coaching staff of the national team also contributed to the management's decision.
"We considered his long-term involvement with Gilas and we don't want it to be a distraction, so we have to make things workable for all of us," he said.
Gavina, meanwhile, said it was easy for him to accept the challenge of coaching the team.
"We're a playoff contender, but we look forward to winning championships in the future," he said.
Gavina previously coached the Mahindra Enforcers as Manny Pacquiao's first assistant in 2016.
He took the franchise to its only playoff appearance in the PBA during the 2016 Governors' Cup. The team claimed the fifth seed after finishing the elimination round with a 6-5 record.
When Pacquiao's contract expired, Gavina was later appointed head coach of the team, which changed its name to Kia Picanto. He resigned from his post in 2017.
