Filipino teen reportedly punched, called racial slur in US basketball tournament

An Asian-American teen basketball player reportedly became a "victim of racist attacks" after he was called racial slurs and punched during a game held in Oakland.

According to a report by news website SFGate on Monday, a teen player of Filipino heritage 'Evan' was shoved and tripped by another player in a tournament organized by Grassroots 365. He was also punched in the head, which according to his parents, caused a concussion.

Prior to the incident, the parents narrated in a separate report by CBS SF Bay Area that Evan and some of his teammates, who were also of Asian heritage, were called anti-Asian slurs.

The father of 'Evan' said no one bothered to take action after the incident. According to reports, the other player was allowed to finish the game, though he was eventually banned from the second day of the tournament.

“The worst part is no one apologized,” he said.

Another parent who witnessed the incident also said the organizers did not even view the video at first.

In a statement, Grassroots 365 later said “We are sickened by the senseless and deplorable actions of individual players on the court this past weekend in Oakland. We have taken swift action to address the individuals involved and will continue to diligently and comprehensively investigate the incident that took place.”
